Fuel security for Australias

Right now, war in the Middle East is pushing up fuel prices and impacting supply all over the world. We’re responding the Australian way, looking after people and making sure Australia is ready for what’s ahead.

Current status

We are currently at Level 2 of the National Fuel Security Plan.

That means fuel supply continues to operate effectively, but localised supply disruptions can occur. State and territory governments from both sides of politics are working together to take precautionary action and shore up fuel supply. When you’re at the servo only buy what you need, and reduce use where you can.

What we're doing

We’ve acted fast to secure our fuel supply and support Australians who are struggling with costs.

We've halved the fuel tax for three months and passed tough new laws against petrol price gouging to make sure you’re the one seeing the savings.

And we’re securing more fuel supply by bringing more fuel into Australia, releasing some of our reserves and keeping more fuel here at home.

We've taken action to shield Australians from the worst of the impacts:

  • Halved the fuel excise for three months to save you money at the bowser.
  • Doubled the fines for servos caught ripping you off.
  • Working with international partners to secure more fuel supply.
  • Released 20% of our fuel reserves to deal with shortages across the country.
  • Cut the GST on fuel to lower the price per litre further.
  • Temporarily changed the rules to keep more of Australia’s fuel here.
  • Passed laws to help fuel companies get more fuel into Australia.
  • Developed a National Fuel Security Plan with the states and territories to prepare and respond in Australia’s interest.
  • Created a Fuel Supply Taskforce to help get fuel where it’s needed most.

What you can do

We’ll get through this the Australian way - by looking out for each other.

You can do that by:

  • Using public transport where you can.
  • Combining trips and avoiding unnecessary driving.
  • Only buying as much as you need at the bowser.
  • Carpooling with friends, family or colleagues.
  • Watch your speed and drive smoothly to save on fuel.
