CEDA has always been an organisation which looks to the future, advocating for reform based on a broad base of evidence, not the narrow view or noisy voices of vested interest.

That same approach was behind our Jobs and Skills Summit, this time last week, in this very room.

Bringing together people from state and local government, business and industry, unions and the community sector.

People came in good faith – and participated in a spirit of genuine respect.

Of course, not all the attendees reached agreement on every element of every issue.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: Good morning, Patricia.

KARVELAS: Let's start with some of the outcomes of the Jobs Summit if we can. And I just need to start by clearing something up, business leaders left the Jobs Summit with the impression that multi-employer bargaining would be opt in, will it be opt in or compulsory?

I am delighted to announce I will meet with His Excellency Dr José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, during his Guest of Government visit to Australia from 6 to 11 September.

His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd), Governor‑General of Australia, will host President Ramos‑Horta. The President will visit Government House for a ceremonial welcome and state lunch and will lay a wreath at the Australian War Memorial.

I acknowledge traditional owners of the land on which we meet, I pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging.

In that same spirit of respect and reconciliation – I want to acknowledge the public support so many of you here tonight have already given to enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament, in our Constitution.

A Voice to Parliament is a matter of common courtesy and common sense.

It pays respect to the extraordinary privilege we have to share this ancient continent with the world’s oldest continuous culture.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: What we're talking about today is just an absolute tragedy, the fact that nine people will end their life today is something that is a scourge on our society. We need to do much better and today, this morning is an opportunity to pay tribute to those frontline workers who are doing such extraordinary work under enormous pressure themselves, to help their fellow Australians. The prevalence of suicide means that this year, some 65,000 Australians will attempt to end their own life. Quite clearly, we need to do better.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER: Good morning, this morning we've heard from Greg, whose son has type one diabetes, about the difference that the reduction in pharmaceutical costs will make to his life and to his family, by reducing the cost from $42.50 down to $30. This will make a real difference to families who are doing it tough.

For the first time in its 75-year history, the maximum cost of general scripts under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) will fall.

Under a Bill tabled by the Australian Government today, from 1 January 2023 millions of Australians will pay almost 30 per cent less for PBS scripts, with the maximum general co-payment dropping from $42.50 to $30.

This means that someone taking one medication a month could save as much as $150 every year, or for two or three medications as much as $300-$450 a year.

Australia and Timor-Leste today signed a reciprocal Defence Cooperation Agreement (DCA).

The DCA is a status of forces agreement that sets out the reciprocal protections, responsibilities and privileges each country will grant the military personnel of the other in its territory.

The DCA was signed by Defence Ministers following a meeting between Prime Minister the Hon Anthony Albanese MP and President Dr Jose Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste.
