Immigration & Border Protection

“Strong borders allow the government to maintain public trust in community safety, respect for diversity and support for our immigration and humanitarian programs."

Australia is an immigration nation. We are the most successful multicultural society in the world, built on settlement, security and mutual respect. Our country has flourished thanks to cultural diversity that is underpinned by our common values of freedom, equality and mutual respect.

We have secured our borders. There has not been a successful people smuggling expedition to Australia for more than 1,000 days. Our approach is to prevent vulnerable people making dangerous journeys and protect our borders.

The Government is strengthening and reaffirming the value of Australian citizenship. We have introduced legislation that will require anyone who seeks citizenship to respect Australian values, pledge allegiance to our nation and reach an acceptable standard of English.

We are an extraordinary nation, not defined by race or religion or culture, as many other nations are. We're defined by a commitment to common values, the rule of law, democracy, freedom, mutual respect, and equality of men and women. These fundamental values are what make us Australian. The Government is strengthening citizenship to protect our Australian values.

Almost half of our current population was either born overseas, or has at least one parent born overseas. We will continue to ensure that those who seek to join our Australian family demonstrate their commitment to the values that define us and unite us as Australians.
