Prime Minister to attend the opening of the 67th Session of the United Nations General Assembly

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will travel to New York from 23-27 September to attend the opening of the 67th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The United Nations is the world’s pre-eminent multilateral body, and Australia, as a founding member state, is committed to active engagement on its agenda.
The Prime Minister will address the United Nations General Assembly and participate in a number of high-level events at the core of the UN’s work, including on progressing the Millennium Development Goals, enhancing access to education opportunities, strengthening the rule of law and coordinating international peacekeeping and peacebuilding efforts.
While in New York, the Prime Minister will also have meetings with a range of leaders.
The Prime Minister’s visit to New York will provide an opportunity to advance Australia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2013-14 term.
