Australian Government coat of arms

Prime Minister of Australia

The Hon Tony Abbott MP

29 August 2014

  • I will travel to India and Malaysia from 4 to 6 September. On my first visit to India as Prime Minister, I will visit New Delhi and India’s financial capital, Mumbai, to strengthen the strategic partnership between our two countries. Australia and India have strong and growing economic and trade ties. India is Australia's fifth largest export market, with total exports of $11.4 billion, and there is potential for further cooperation in resources, science, technology and education.

  • The 200th anniversary of Governor Arthur Phillip’s life was commemorated today at the launch of the Defining Moments in Australian History project at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. In a moment that set the course for modern Australia, Governor Phillip led the First Fleet to Botany Bay in January 1788. He founded the first British settlement at Sydney and became the first Governor of the colony of New South Wales. Two hundred years after Phillip’s death on 31 August, a new plaque in the National Museum’s main hall now marks Phillip’s central historical role, which begins the new Defining Moments project.

  • Every day the Government is working to build a stronger economy so that we can help Australia’s families and small businesses. A stronger economy means more investment, more exports and more jobs.  Everyone benefits. Now, with the return of Parliament on Tuesday, the Government is continuing to put in place the policies that are part of our Economic Action Strategy.

  • The Commonwealth and South Australian Governments are getting on with building the infrastructure for the 21st century with early works on the North-South Corridor Torrens Road to River Torrens project beginning today at Ashwin Parade. This is the first instalment of the $1.5 billion upgrade of the North-South Corridor which will slash travel times, boost freight efficiency and create hundreds of new local jobs.

  • Mr Roger Wilkins AO will finish his term as Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department on 31 August 2014.

  • It’s good to be here at the Joint Operations Command Centre to say thank you to the men and women of the Australian Defence Force and others who have been helping to coordinate our operations overseas. As you know, I’ve spent most of the last week overseas in connection with various operations.

  • On Wednesday night I was privileged to visit Al Minhad Airbase in the United Arab Emirates where the dedicated and highly professional men and women of the Australian Defence Force were preparing for the first Australian humanitarian aid drop to Northern Iraq. The mission was conducted by a RAAF C-130J Hercules delivering ten pallets of badly needed supplies to Yezidi civilians trapped on Mount Sinjar by encircling ISIL forces.

  • Over the last three weeks there has been a worldwide outpouring of grief for the victims of downed flight MH17. Many nations have come together to condemn this atrocity, help recover remains and investigate this terrible crime. This includes more than 500 Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence Force personnel deployed under Operation Bring Them Home and diplomats from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
