  • The Commonwealth and South Australian Governments are getting on with building the infrastructure for the 21st century with early works on the North-South Corridor Torrens Road to River Torrens project beginning today at Ashwin Parade. This is the first instalment of the $1.5 billion upgrade of the North-South Corridor which will slash travel times, boost freight efficiency and create hundreds of new local jobs.

  • It’s good to be here at the Joint Operations Command Centre to say thank you to the men and women of the Australian Defence Force and others who have been helping to coordinate our operations overseas. As you know, I’ve spent most of the last week overseas in connection with various operations.

  • Mr Roger Wilkins AO will finish his term as Secretary of the Attorney-General’s Department on 31 August 2014.

  • On Wednesday night I was privileged to visit Al Minhad Airbase in the United Arab Emirates where the dedicated and highly professional men and women of the Australian Defence Force were preparing for the first Australian humanitarian aid drop to Northern Iraq. The mission was conducted by a RAAF C-130J Hercules delivering ten pallets of badly needed supplies to Yezidi civilians trapped on Mount Sinjar by encircling ISIL forces.

  • Over the last three weeks there has been a worldwide outpouring of grief for the victims of downed flight MH17. Many nations have come together to condemn this atrocity, help recover remains and investigate this terrible crime. This includes more than 500 Australian Federal Police and Australian Defence Force personnel deployed under Operation Bring Them Home and diplomats from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

  • Overnight, I’ll leave Australia to travel to the Netherlands. I will spend Monday in the Netherlands. I’ll be meeting with Prime Minister Rutte, amongst others, in connection with the work that Australia and Holland have done together to help bring home and bring justice for the victims of Flight MH17.

  • The Commonwealth Government strongly supports President Obama’s announcement regarding targeted airstrikes against ISIL forces in the Kurdish region of Iraq, accompanied by humanitarian airdrops.

  • Today, Australia lost a musical giant with the passing of composer Peter Sculthorpe AO OBE. From his humble beginnings in Tasmania, Peter Sculthorpe studied in post-war London, but returned to Australia and changed the country's music landscape forever.

  • The Government will introduce a range of counter-terrorism measures to give security agencies the resources and legislative powers needed to combat home-grown terrorism and Australians who participate in terrorist activities overseas.
