Australian Government coat of arms

Prime Minister of Australia

The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP

29 December 2015

  • The Minister for Cities and the Built Environment, the Hon Jamie Briggs MP, has resigned from the ministry. The Hon Mal Brough MP and I have agreed that he will stand aside as Special Minister of State and Minister for Defence Materiel and Science pending the completion of inquiries by the police.

  • Lucy and I were very sad to learn of the death of our friend the Honourable Jim Carlton AO. On behalf of the Government and the Liberal Party, I offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Diana and their children Alex, Freia and Rob and their families.

  • This Christmas we thank you, the men and women of the ADF, and especially those of you who are serving abroad – around the world, in the deserts and skies of Iraq, the high hills of Afghanistan or the high seas – away from your family and loved ones.

  • Christmas is a joyful and loving time when we welcome home far flung family and friends, and relax and reminisce with those closest to us. It is also a time for reflection, and thanking those who have served us and protected us throughout the year – many of whom won’t be home to spend Christmas with their family and close friends.

  • Prime Minister: You’ve all been to the visit to the Miraikan Museum of technology and innovation and it was great to meet ASIMO the robot. It’s the first time I’ve met a robot, first time I’ve taken a selfie with a robot. I suppose the next time we come here the robot will take the selfie himself. But this Innovation Agenda is absolutely critical. It’s critical to the prosperity of both Australia and Japan.

  • The close friendship between Japan and Australia has grown stronger with every year. And it was, of course, Prime Minister Abe’s grandfather who paved the way for our modern relationship. Prime Minister Kishi was the first Japanese leader to visit Australia, when he negotiated the Japan-Australia Commerce Treaty with Australia’s Prime Minister Robert Menzies.

  • Prime Minister: Well thank you so much Doctor Mohri. It is wonderful to be here visiting the Miraikan, your science and innovation museum, something that inspires and instructs and excites all the visitors, including this one! I was so excited to meet ASIMO, my first robot. The first robot I've shaken hands with, first robot I've taken a selfie with. Perhaps next time he can take the selfie of us.

  • My very dear friend Senator Michael Ronaldson has announced his intention to retire from the Senate. Michael has served the Parliament of Australia with distinction for 22 years.

  • Japanese Prime Minister, H.E. Mr Shinzo Abe, and Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, met in Tokyo today for the annual Japan-Australia summit. The meeting strengthened the deep and longstanding strategic, economic and people-to-people ties between the two countries.

  • I’ve just come from a tea ceremony with Prime Minister Abe. He graciously invited me to tea at the tea house where we were served tea and the tea ceremony shown how to make tea by Master Sen, the 16th in his line of tea masters.
