  • Today is an important milestone for Operation Sovereign Borders (OSB), marking two years since the last successful people smuggling venture. This achievement is a result of the Coalition’s vigilant commitment to its successful border policy. The Prime Minister reiterated his Government’s commitment to protecting Australia’s borders, stamping out people smuggling and preventing people risking their lives at sea.

  • The Commonwealth Government will establish a Royal Commission, in co-operation with the Government of the Northern Territory into the Don Dale Youth Detention Centre.

  • Prime Minister: I’m here with the Attorney General to talk about important legislative measures to keep Australia safe in the face of increased terrorist activity around the world. Before I move to that I want to note that over the weekend I conveyed our deepest sympathies and strongest solidarity to the Charge D'affaires in the Embassy of Afghanistan here in Australia in the wake of the killing in Kabul, the most severe terrorist action in that city since 2001.

  • Early in the new Parliament we will introduce the Counter-Terrorism Legislation Amendment Bill (No. 1) 2016.

  • The Turnbull Government is delivering on its election commitment to support South Australia’s steel sector and workers at Arrium. The Export Finance and Insurance Corporation will provide a loan under the National Interest Account of $49.2 million for new machinery at the Iron Knob and Iron Baron mines. This will enable Arrium’s OneWhyalla business to process iron ore to export quality and is expected to boost Arrium’s cash flow by more than $200 million over the next five years.
